Importance of Evaluating Teaching in a Research–Intensive University

Professor Anna M. Kindler, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada

The culture of research-intensive universities has traditionally emphasized and rewarded research and scholarship. Yet, within the changing world of the global academia, where demands for public accountability for fulfilling educational mandates are on the rise, student tuition is becoming an increasingly critical source of funding; and where international university rankings pay significantly more attention to students’ satisfaction and educational attainment, research-intensive universities are faced with the necessity to re-imagine themselves as institutions that more appropriately balance their research and teaching missions. In order to pursue excellence in teaching and learning it is essential to develop and implement policies that allow to systematically assess faculty teaching performance and use this data for quality improvement. Having served 10 years as Vice Provost and Associate Vice President Academic at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, Professor Anna M. Kindler presided over development of such policies at her institution and provided oversight of their implementation In this presentation she will share her reflections on the value and challenges in evaluating university teaching and offer advice on policy development and practice in carrying out teaching evaluations.
